A VPN isn’t just for keeping your internet browsing private when you’re using your Smart TV at home. It’s also a handy tool for maintaining access to internet services when you’re travelling, even if you’re just trying to watch your favorite shows from back home while chilling out in the hotel.

That’s why we’ve put together our very own guide on VPNs for Smart TVs. To bring you the best recommendations, we’ve tested dozens of today's best VPNs to see which ones perform the best in terms of speed, usability, and international access.

5 best Smart TV VPNs: quick overview

1. NordVPNThe best VPN overall

1. NordVPN
The best VPN overall
NordVPN makes installing and using a smart TV app exceptionally easy, even if you have no experience with VPNs. Even on TVs that don’t support native VPN apps, its SmartPlay Smart DNS tool allows you to access streaming content from back home without any need for additional setup. Once it’s installed, NordVPN takes care of the rest. We’ve found that NordVPN is more than fast enough for HD and 4K streaming. It’s also risk-free to try thanks to a 30-day money-back guarantee.

2. SurfsharkThe best cheap VPN

2. Surfshark
The best cheap VPN
Surfshark is a great solution if you’ve got a household full of streaming fanatics. One subscription covers every device you own, thanks to unlimited simultaneous connections. It’s also seriously quick, so you shouldn’t encounter buffering while watching your favorite shows. Like NordVPN, Surfshark offers a reliable Smart DNS option if you can’t install its native VPN apps on your TV. Best of all, it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to try before you buy.

3. ExpressVPNThe best VPN for beginners

3. ExpressVPN
The best VPN for beginners
ExpressVPN is purpose-built to be easy to set up, even on smart TVs. Just download it from the app store and scan a QR code, then you’re in business. MediaStreamer, ExpressVPN’s own Smart DNS feature, gives you access to a whole world of content in case you want to catch up on TV from back home. Plus, if you don’t want to set up your own router for streaming on a smart TV, ExpressVPN’s Aircove router comes prepackaged with everything you need to get your VPN router working. You have 30 days to claim a full refund if you’re not satisfied.

4. Proton VPNThe best VPN for privacy

4. Proton VPN
The best VPN for privacy
Proton VPN doesn’t come with support for Smart DNS, but it does offer a dedicated Apple TV app in addition to support for Android-based TV devices. It might not be quite as easy to use as our top three, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less powerful. It’s also one of the only VPNs out there with a completely free tier that doesn’t cap your bandwidth, making it a great last-resort VPN if you’re in a pinch. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans.

5. CyberGhostSimple and speedy

5. CyberGhost
Simple and speedy
CyberGhost’s apps and setup guides make it one of the most user-friendly VPNs for smart TVs. It performed extremely well in our streaming access tests, putting it on par with NordVPN in terms of streaming providers you can access. That’s due in part to CyberGhost’s dedicated streaming servers, which clearly show the provider each one is optimized for. Plus, with a 45-day money-back guarantee, CyberGhost offers plenty of time to get used to the app without committing to a long-term plan.

1. NordVPN

A speedy, reliable, well-known provider

Smart DNS works across all major smart TVs
Apps for Android and Apple TV are easy to use
Fast and stable speeds on NordLynx
OpenVPN speeds are below average
No port forwarding

NordVPN tops our list of the best Smart TV VPNs because it’s a fantastic all-around VPN, as well as one that’ll seamlessly fit onto your smart TV. It’s also one of the best streaming VPNs according to our in-house streaming tests, so if you need to access content while on holiday, NordVPN successfully unblocks most popular platforms.

Setting up NordVPN on a smart TV is easy, but the process is different depending on your device. If you’re using Android TV, Fire TV, or Apple TV, there’s a native app available from the respective app store. Setup takes just a few minutes from the comfort of your couch, but if you need guidance, NordVPN offers an extensive set of setup walkthroughs on its site.

2. Surfshark

An affordable Smart TV VPN choice

Unlimited device connections per plan
Smart DNS feature
Simple to use app
Fewer advanced settings on smart TV apps
Smart DNS setup can occasionally require reactivation

Surfshark misses out on our top spot because it’s slightly more expensive than NordVPN and doesn’t offer as many server locations to choose from. That said, if you’ve got a bunch of devices to deal with, Surfshark might be better value for money. Every Surfshark subscription comes with an unlimited simultaneous connection policy, making it ideal for any household with multiple smart TVs.

Surfshark offers native apps for Android TV and Fire TV that are easy to navigate with a remote. All you need to do is head to the Play Store and download the app. Once you’re in, Surfshark offers multiple ways to log in: either by scanning a QR code from a device you’re already logged into or by entering a login code you can find on your account dashboard. If you’d prefer to, you can just enter your account credentials too.

3. ExpressVPN

User-friendly setup and awesome speeds

Top-tier speeds
Excellent Smart DNS feature
Easy router integration with Aircove whole-home coverage
More expensive than most competitors
Allows only 8 simultaneous connections

ExpressVPN continues to excel when it comes to ease of use. Its wide platform support and straightforward setup make it one of the best options if you’ve never used a VPN before. ExpressVPN also has one of the best options for pre-packaged VPN router support with Aircove, although it’s a little pricey compared to buying a VPN-capable router and doing the install yourself.

In terms of aesthetics, ExpressVPN may have the best UI on our list. A lot of thought has been put into making ExpressVPN’s apps on Android TV and Apple TV as appealing as possible, resulting in an experience that’s totally smooth from the moment you download the app.

The best secure Smart TV VPN

4. Proton VPN

A fast, streaming unblock Smart TV VPN powerhouse

Transparent, open-source apps with verified no-logs policy
Fantastic worldwide location coverage
Free VPN with unlimited bandwidth
No Smart DNS support
Smaller server network than top competitors

Proton VPN is a VPN that puts user privacy first and foremost, but it also performs well when accessing content on a Smart TV. The free plan isn’t ideal for streaming because it doesn’t allow you to choose which location your VPN connects to, but if you’re going with a paid plan, Proton VPN is nearly as good as the other providers on our list.

Proton VPN’s support for smart TVs is somewhat of a mixed bag. On the plus side, you don’t need a paid account to install Proton VPN on your smart TV. However, if your smart TV doesn’t support Android or iOS apps, you’ll have to install Proton VPN on your router and cover your smart TV that way instead. Proton currently does not offer an independent Smart DNS feature, and it’s unclear if it will be offered in the future.

The best mid-tier VPN

5. CyberGhost

A quality VPN with a vast server network

Dedicated streaming servers
Simple Smart DNS setup for all major TVs
Long 45-day money-back guarantee
Interface feels basic compared to rivals
IP addresses sometimes trip CAPTCHA warnings

CyberGhost's approachable design and guided setup make it an easy recommendation for anyone new to VPNs. It’s especially good for users who want to get up and running quickly on a smart TV without digging through complex menus.

CyberGhost provides native apps for Android TV and Fire TV, plus clear instructions for using Smart DNS on Samsung, LG, and other non-Android smart TVs. While it’s not particularly pretty compared to apps like ExpressVPN, CyberGhost’s app couldn’t be simpler to use. There’s a connect button, a location dropdown, and a settings menu on the home screen. Clicking into the location dropdown gives you the choice between a countries tab, dedicated streaming servers, and a custom list full of your favourite servers.

How to choose a Smart TV VPN

When choosing the best Smart TV VPN, there are a few things to prioritize. First off, with streaming as the priority here, you'll want a provider that hosts high-speed servers so you can comfortably stream in 4K.

Of course, you'll also want to benefit from all your favorite streaming platforms. That means picking a VPN that can unblock the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, and the rest no matter where you are. What's more, you'll be in need of a VPN that is both affordable and boasts excellent security features.

With a Smart TV VPN, things can get a little trickier when it comes down to the installation process. Not all models allow you to simply install an app onto its interface (see the FAQ section at the bottom of the page for more details). The best Smart VPNs will therefore offer router support or SmartDNS as well as an app. With this in mind, we'd also recommend a service that has a reputation for great customer support in case you're in need of assistance.

Smart TV VPN FAQs

Can I use a VPN on a smart TV?

Yes, but not all smart TVs support native VPN apps. Android and iOS-based TVs support native VPN apps, whereas other smart TVs may require you to cover them by installing a VPN on your router. If you can edit your DNS settings, you can also use your provider’s Smart DNS server instead.

This method lets you route TV traffic through the VPN provider’s servers without needing an app, but it won’t give you the same privacy protections as a full-on VPN app.

Can I use a free smart TV VPN?

You can, but we don’t recommend it. Many free services also collect data on your internet browsing habits, defeating the purpose of using a VPN in the first place. Free VPNs also typically have data caps, which make them unsuitable for streaming.

Even the rare free VPNs that don’t cap your bandwidth like Proton VPN tend to limit the number of server locations you can choose from, making it more difficult to access the content you want.

Does NordVPN work with smart TVs?

Yes. NordVPN supports most smart TVs through its native Android TV and Fire TV apps, as well as its SmartPlay Smart DNS feature for other models. You can also install it on a compatible router to extend VPN protection to every device in your home.
